Gray hair, or grey if you prefer the British spelling, changes how clothes look on you more than almost any other hair change, because it moves your hair from warm to cool and usually from dark to light at the same time. The colors that suited you at 35 may not be the ones that suit you now. The good news is that gray handles clear, rich color very well.
What going gray changes
Most natural hair has some warmth in it. Gray and silver hair has very little; it reads as cool. It is also lighter than the hair it replaces, so the contrast between hair and skin drops for people with fair skin and rises for people with deep skin.
Two things tend to follow. First, warm, muddy neutrals near the face, like beige, khaki and mustard, can make gray look yellowed and skin look tired. Second, clear mid-to-deep colors, navy, burgundy, berry, cobalt, emerald, keep gray looking bright and deliberate. The aim is to make the gray look chosen.
Gray hair shades

10.11
Silver
Light, cool and bright. The .11 (intense ash) is the tone silver toners aim for, cancelling any yellow.
Salt and pepper
Dark hair with gray mixed through. Medium contrast and still partly warm, so it suits a wider range: navy, charcoal, burgundy, and also olive and camel.
White
The lightest and coolest. Deep, clear colors frame it best; very pale colors near the face can wash it out.
Steel or charcoal gray
Darker gray, close to pewter. More depth, so softer and lighter colors work too.
Colors that tend to flatter gray hair
- NavyDeep cool blue makes silver look bright and polished. The most reliable basic for gray hair.
- BurgundyA rich color that adds warmth to the face without warming the hair.
- BerryBrings color back to the complexion, which gray hair often needs.
- CobaltA clear blue that makes silver look intentional.
- EmeraldA deep jewel tone that reads crisp next to gray.
- Soft pinkSoft, clear pink near the face is flattering on many silver-haired people, especially with fair skin.
- PlumDeep and cool, a softer alternative to black for evening.
- Soft whiteCrisp, clean white keeps gray looking fresh. Soft white is easier on warm skin than optic white.
Silver and white
Navy, cobalt, emerald, berry, soft pink and crisp white. These hair colors are light and cool, so they need clear color near the face. Silver, white gold and pearl look natural.
Salt and pepper
Navy, charcoal, burgundy, olive and camel. Because the dark hair is still there, salt and pepper keeps some warmth and contrast, and handles warmer colors better than full silver. The home page comparison shows a navy versus a sand beige sweater on salt-and-pepper hair.
Colors to handle carefully
- BeigeBeige and greige sit next to gray and can make both hair and skin look drab. Wear them lower down, or under a navy or burgundy layer.
- MustardYellow and mustard can bring out yellow tones in gray hair.
- Pale grayPale gray matching the hair reads as one flat block. Tonal gray works when there is a deeper gray in the mix.
- KhakiKhaki is grayish and muddy, a tired-looking neighbor for gray hair.
If your gray has started to look yellow, from sun, hard water or smoke, a purple or blue toning shampoo is the common fix, and it usually makes cool colors look even better.
Neutrals for gray hair
Navy, charcoal, white and black. Black and silver together is a classic high-contrast look; if black feels harsh on your skin, charcoal or navy gives most of the effect. Camel works for salt and pepper and warm skin, as long as something cooler sits near the face.
Metals and accessories
Silver, white gold, pewter and pearl repeat the cool tone of the hair. Gold works if your skin is warm, and mixing both is fine. Glasses frames matter: tortoiseshell can look warm and soft; black, navy or burgundy frames give a gray-haired face definition.
Makeup, briefly
Gray hair can make a face look paler. A little color on the lips or cheeks, berry, rose, or soft coral if your skin is warm, often does what the burgundy coat does in the photo above: it brings warmth back without fighting the hair.

If you are growing out your gray
During the grow-out, your hair is two colors at once. Dress for the gray you are heading toward: navy, charcoal and clear jewel tones bridge the dyed and natural parts, while beiges and warm browns near the face tend to highlight the line. Try your future silver on your photo first, then open the finder at silver gray.
Common questions
What colors should you wear with gray hair?
Clear, mid-to-deep colors usually work best: navy, burgundy, berry, cobalt, emerald, plum, plus crisp white. They keep gray looking bright and intentional.
What colors should gray-haired people avoid?
Rather than avoid, handle with care: beige, greige, khaki and mustard right at the neckline can make gray look yellowed or flat. Wear them lower down or under a deeper layer.
Does black look good with gray hair?
Often, yes: black and silver is a classic high-contrast pairing. If black feels harsh on your skin, navy or charcoal give a similar effect more softly.
